Ross RFC U15s 5 Worcester RFC U15s 15
ROSS RFC’s youngsters were surprised but pleased to be playing rugby at the weekend, after the recent run of bad weather, reports KIM PARKER.
Unfortunately, Worcester scored within the opening minutes – a pattern in Ross’s game that they will be keen to break.
After the early setback, the visitors matched Worcester well, with the game becoming end-to-end as both teams missed out on potential scoring opportunities.
But Ross scored a try through Euan Winstanley matched by another Worcester score, with the hosts holding a narrow 10–5 lead at half-time.
The visitors had shown enough ability to believe they could still win the match, and the second half saw several try-saving tackles from Ross, along with kicks that ran dead and, on another day, could easily have bounced the other way.
Worcester stayed composed and continued to play consistently good rugby, and although it remained a one score game until the very last minute, the hosts sealed victory with a last-gasp third try.
Ross can take real heart from a defensive line that looked more organised than in previous weeks, as well as a back line that ran some promising attacking plays.
Man of the Match was Aidan Finlay who gave a great set piece performance, was strong in the defensive line and gave 100 per cent around the park.
And a special mention goes to Ollie Hatch in his first game.
It’s the turn of the U16 this Friday (February 13) under the lights at Drybook.
Kick-off is 7pm, weather permitting, and supporters are more than welcome.
