WYE canoeist Sofia Alfer stormed to team silver for GB in the U18 World Canoe Slalom Championships in Foix, France.

This was the Ross teenager’s second world championships, but this year competing over six days she made the podium in the team event and placed sixth overall in the individual kayak.

Former John Kyrle student Sofia, who is a member of Wyedean Canoe Club whotrains regularly at Symonds Yat Rapids, and now studies at Hartpury, will next compete at the European Championship in Solkan, Slovenia.

Club slalom coach Mike Mitchell said: “This is an amazing achievement for Sofia and the Wyedean Slalom Squad.

“We have got such a strong squad of young paddlers training most days at the Yat or at white water courses across the country, and this achievement was just a week after five of the younger paddlers competed in the European Canoe Association Championships in Augsburg, Germany, where we took a gold medal in the U16s and two golds and a silver in the U14 events.”

Meanwhile, club mate Jake Mitchell has headed to the Junior Olympics in North Macedonia this week to represent Team GB.
