Swimmers of all abilities are welcome to join very special new year swim at Monmouth School for Girls.
?
Following the success of the first Swim for Tom in January 2019, there will be a second Swim for Tom between 10am and 9pm on Sunday, January 12th. This promises to be a joyous and fun community event and at the same time will raise money for Cancer Research Wales.
Swimmers of all abilities, from beginners to Olympians, are needed to help break this year’s target of swimming 1000km. Last year many swimmers – including beginners – swam further than they had ever done before. The organisers also need volunteers to count the number of lengths and help with the café (including baking cakes) and general organisation of the event. All swimmers and volunteers will receive a commemorative pin badge, swimmers will get a Swim for Tom swim hat and volunteers will get a Swim for Tom T-shirt.
Like last year, each swimmer will be allocated an hour-long slot and it will be possible to swim in the same lane as your friends and family. There will be up to eight swimmers per lane, and as well as keeping families and groups together the organisers will try to allocate lanes based on swimming ability. There is a suggested donation of £10 per swimmer.
If you would like to swim or volunteers please register online at http://swimfortom.uk/index.php, please register now
The last day to register has been extended to Wednesday, January 8th.
Tom Walker was a pupil at Monmouth School for Boys who died the day after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2018. Tom was a keen swimmer and in order to remember Tom, his sister, Holly and then deputy head girl Katie Cameron from Monmouth School for Girls and Monnow Swimming Club organised a swimathon (known as “Swim for Tom”) in 2019. The raised over £25,000 for Tom’s Fund. Set up by Cancer Research Wales the aim of the fund is to support three-year research posts focussing on acute myeloid leukaemia.
