Ross Tennis Centre re-kindled their U18 Boys Championships event last Sunday. Local boys competed in a round robin event split into two groups with all competitors playing everyone in their group. Matches consisted of one short set, first to six games. The weather was glorious which enabled play to continue uninterrupted. Each group winner played the runner up of the other group to form the semi-finals.Christian Porter faced Jamie Downs in the first semi which proved to be a highly entertaining match with Jamie producing some wonderful skilful shots despite losing 6-0. The second semi –final between Alfie Davies and Conor Kearns proved to be a thrilling contest with both players showing great determination. Conor stormed into a 3-0 lead but Alfie clawed his way back into the match, with all games going to several deuces until Conor broke his opponents serve to lead 5-4. Conor, then serving for the match and with Alfie who was not finished yet, lost the aggressive game as Alfie broke back to level the match. The final deciding game meant that Alfie would now be serving for a place in the final. In an extremely tense deciding game, Conor managed to secure a win on his fourth match point.
The final, to decide the overall champion, proved to be one sided, Conor seemingly drained from his exertions in the semi and was powerless to prevent Christian storming to a 6-0 victory. Praise must go to Christian who has changed his technique from being a good counter-puncher to now being a far more aggressive tennis player.
All the players should be proud of not only how they played but the spirit the event was played in. Other competitors involved were, Sam Vidler, Joe Pye, Geraint Williams and Conor Porter. The trophy and prizes were presented by coach, Chris Friend.
