The Garnons Estate (HR4 7JX) will be the picturesque setting for seven epic races for the Ross Harriers point-to-point on Sunday, March 5th; the curtain raiser for the Welsh Border region.
The unique undulating course, overlooked by the splendid country house that has been home to the Cotterrell family for generations, sweeps through the Herefordshire parkland, giving the true flavour of racing ‘between the flags’. On the other side of the course, The Black Mountains provide a scenic backdrop as horses battle for position on the home turn. But with a steep bank to climb, it is a true test of stamina, and results often change in the final strides.
With a Timico Mixed Open and a Jockey Club Open Maiden for mares and fillies only on the card, competition is sure to be hot, especially as, unusually, this will be the sole opportunity to run at Garnons this season.
Perrystone-based secretary, Verity Look, has been working hard for the fixture, and has been gratified by the support of local sponsors.
The flag will drop for the first race at 1pm, though many racegoers arrive early to enjoy the magnificent scenery and atmosphere of the venue. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are kept on leads.
Entrance to the course is £10 per person, under 16s and car parking free.
