Weston Athletic recorded an important victory in the North Gloucestershire Division 2 with a 4 – 1 away victory against White Horse on Saturday, to leave them eight points behind league leaders Lydney. But with three games in hand and only five games of the season to go, Weston know that if they win all their remaining games they will win the league, which only a few weeks ago seemed unlikely.
Weston made one change to their starting 11 from last week's victory, with Wes Downing coming back in for Alex Malsom, the starting line up was Wayne Husbands, Paul Burnham and Shaun Aston in the back three, a midfield of Jack Bray, Dave Nicholls, Steve Kittner, Lee Walker and Liam Parry with Wes Downing and Eli Wooding up front.
Weston started the game brightly and controlled the pace of the game from the outset. It came as no surprise when Weston opened the scoring. After 15 minutes Kittner won a 50/50 in the middle of the pitch and played the ball to Wooding, who went past one defender and played a delightful pass to put Downing one on one with the keeper. With composure Downing rounded the keeper and finished to put Weston one up. The home side then put Weston under a bit of pressure, but the dangerous pacey strikers were expertly marshalled by the back three of Husbands, Burnham and Aston. On one occasion the home side's striker got away from Husbands but keeper Morris made a smart save with his feet.
Weston always looked dangerous, in particular when Wooding ghosted past seven defenders andseemed destined to score. But after a great save the teams went into half time with Weston having a slender one nil lead.
