If it was drama you were looking for then Ross served it up last Saturday, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with a 12 point comeback in the last five minutes. And in the process reaching the top half of the table for the first time this season.
Both teams started slowly but it was apparent that the big Bristol side had come to dominate upfront and it was from a set piece that they opened their account. After conceding a penalty on halfway, Bristol kicked deep into the Ross twenty two securing a line-out. Ross did repel the initial drive but the collapsed maul brought an attacking scrum and Bristol were able to get a shove on for their eight to pick up and dive over. The try was converted and the visitors were 7-0 ahead. But Ross hit back with a Craig Powell penalty to cut the deficit to 7-3. This seemed to kick start the game for Ross, as they took control.
With the half coming to a close Casey Morgan put Ross ahead, who burst through the defence before wrong footing the fullback to score under the posts. Craig Powell converted and Ross were 10-7 ahead at the break.
The second half belonged to the visitors. Ross looked to move run the ball out of defence but strong tackling and counter rucking saw the visitors dominate territory. Two penalties put them 20-10 ahead. With time running out Ross started to play some rugby. Craig Smith and Chay Brine looked dangerous out wide and Ross looked the fitter of the two forward packs. With less than five minutes to go Chay Brine collected his own chip kick to dive over to score wide out on the left putting Ross 15-20 behind.
From the kick off they retained possession and with a calm assurance slowly made their way up field with strong running from Casey Morgan. As the clock ticked Ross were deep in the Bristol twenty two and finally Denver Rollings was able to squeeze over to score and bring the scores level.
Craig Powell had the unenviable task of taking the conversion to seal a win and he calmly stroked the ball between the posts securing Ross an unlikely victory. The GMP Software design Man of the match was Casey Morgan for another strong display on the flank in both attack and defence
Ross are in league action at Cainscross on October 13th, with the next home game for the first XV on October 20th against Cheltenham Civil Service.
