Ross' ranks were short of some the Goliaths of the game for this contest. Names such as Adamson, Jones, Tremlett, Clare and Weston were all missing, as were Peck and Kearns. However, Ross turned to youth upon which to rebuild, and how this gamble paid off.

The cynical mind would make great play of the fact that this Cheltenham D team had very few remaining members from the same fixture this time last year, or that the team faced must have been very unlucky indeed to have lost their three previous fixtures, very unlucky indeed!

Using a spine of experience, including such stalwarts as Faulkner, Hughes, Crouch, Ridgeway and Harbottle, Ross made a slow start and the defence, including the emergency addition at right back of Captain Marvel himself, were unfortunately breached four times within just twenty minutes of the start.
