MADAM, Two thousand years ago Caesar Augustus – who was fairly good at government – remarked that: 'We should make few laws, but that we should see that they are observed.'
I hear that the police in Gloucestershire are now saying that they cannot cope, though they are not offering to resign. It was a bigger surprise to hear that folk in Ross, inviting destitution, were advocating more road signs.
If we were to read all the road signs that we have at present, when we are supposed to be looking where we are going, we would very likely cause an accident. And if we were to install any more stupid embellishments, we would begin to make life more difficult for pedestrians.
