At the end of September the Wye Valley Art Society held its Autumn Exhibition in The Shire Hall, Monmouth. There was an excellent and very colourful display of paintings, drawings and prints in every conceivable medium and visitors to the exhibition showed a great deal of interest in the works.

Sales of the main works were sadly slow, but unframed works in the browsers and art cards were eagerly sought. Some fascinating sculptures in ceramic and wood were also displayed and one was sold, and this added to the interest of the show.

Visitors to the exhibition were excited by the prospect of voting for Best in Show ie. the artwork(s) that they liked the most. The winner, as often in past shows, was Geoff Jennings, with his superb acrylic painting entitled "Unaware", showing a tiny mouse oblivious to the bird of prey hovering above.

Geoff also came second, with his beautiful soft pastel painting of a magnificent lion’s head, entitled "Dominance". Geoff trained at Birmingham College of Art in Graphic Design and Illustration and worked for many well known companies. Since moving to The Forest of Dean he has produced sculptures, clay models and paintings and his art reflects his passion for nature.

Third place went to "First Light", an accomplished watercolour in blue, showing trees by water and painted by Janice Skeates.

Watch out for the next Exhibition, which will be in the spring.
