AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report that a large entry for the Bank Holiday livestock market in Ross-on-Wye on August 25 met another good trade topping at £2,672 for steers and £2,429 for heifers.

There were no real butchers’ cattle put forward at the auction, but those well meated cattle consistently sold between 360p and 378p per kilogramme. Heavier sorts sold between £2,300 and £2,672.

The top vendor was DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm.

A short entry of cull cows met a fast trade peaking at 305p per kilogramme. Auctioneer William Probert observed that more cows could have easily been sold to this trade.

The overall average price of cull cows was 275p per kilogramme which equals £1,799 per head.

The top vendor was RD EA CJ Gott, of Nash End Farm.

The lambs meet a buoyant trade with the divide growing between lean and fat lambs. The lamb trade was much sharper than expected peaking at £190 with strong demand shown on all classes especially the well fleshed Continentals selling between 330p and 340p per kilogramme.

Heavy lambs again attracted fierce competition with those weighing over 50 kilogrammes selling between £165 and £190 but despite the falling deadweight price the lambs met a firm and consistent trade.

Overall average price of lambs was £144/head 43kg SQQ. The top vendor was I Bevan of Trothlands Farm.

A nice entry met a cull ewes and rams met a fast trade from start to finish. Texel cross and Suffolk cross ewes topped at £198 on two occasions. Many stronger sorts sold between £150 and £198 and many leaner strong ewes sold between £120 and £150.

A smaller entry of very lean sorts sold up to £100. The average price of ewes was £122. The top vendor was BF Fisher of Little Oaklands Farm.
