Ross on Wye 17 Frampton Cotterell 23
Ross Rugby Club 1st team's run of poor results continues. In a hard fought game, last Saturday, too many basic errors allowed Frampton Cotterell to scrape home with a 23 - 17 victory.
Both teams started tentatively, and basic errors led to a stop-start first quarter. It was Frampton who had the territory, but strong defence by Ross ensured they never looked like scoring a try.
However, as the game entered the second quarter Ross came up offside and Frampton converted a easy penalty to go 3 - 0 up. Neither team looked threatening, and it seemed as though the score would remain 3 - 0 as half-time beckoned. But, from a turnover in midfield, Ross moved the ball left to Luke Gray who dummied to pass, before slicing through a gap. It looked as if he would score, however, he was tackled 10 yards short, but had the presence of mind to offload out of the tackle for Josh Morgan to canter over to score. James Hughes converted and Ross went in at half time 7 - 3 ahead.
The third quarter revealed Ross' Achilles heel, they leaked two tries and two penalties, and found themselves 23 - 7 down with twenty minutes to go. In the last quarter Ross found some form. A great try from Huw Bellamy in the left hand corner, after some slick hands from Chay Brine and Bas Parker, set up a great last 10 minutes. However, Ross had left it too late, and a last minute try from Adam Clements was not enough. Ross fell six points short.
The Field Fayre Man of the Match was TC Leech for his great defensive work. Next Saturday Ross are away to Hucclecote in their last league game before Christmas.
