RESIDENTS of a local care home were recently treated to a memorable day out at Barry Island, rekindling fond memories of childhood holidays and seaside adventures.

For many Ross Court Care Home residents it was their first visit to the beach in decades, bringing smiles, laughter, and plenty of reminiscing.

The sun shone as the group arrived at the seaside resort, famous in recent years for being the backdrop to the Gavin and Stacey sitcom. Barry Island was always popular destination during the miner’s fortnight as it became a vital part of the South Wales holiday scene during the 1960s.

On arrival the residents were greeted by the familiar sounds of seagulls, waves, and cheerful chatter. They enjoyed traditional ice creams and had fun playing the penny slot machines, a favourite pastime for many.

“It was absolutely wonderful,” said one of the women. “The last time I was at Barry Island was in the 1960s with my children. As soon as I saw the beach, all those memories came flooding back. It felt like I’d stepped back in time.”

The day out was carefully planned by staff of Ross Court to support residents’ well-being and spark joyful memories.

Home manager, Agda-Claudia Vasilateanu, said: “This visit was more than just a day out. For many Barry Island holds personal, emotional memories.

“Being able to walk on the beach again, hear the sounds of the fair, taste that classic seaside ice cream, it brings a real sense of connection and joy. We saw faces light up in ways that are difficult to describe.”

One of the residents said the visit brought back memories of courting her late husband: “We used to come here on day trips. We’d share fish and chips and take long walks on the promenade. I never thought I’d be back here; it means the world.”
