Madam, I was very sad to learn of the death of Peter Whiles, who was such an active member of various wildlife and environmental groups.
I have been a volunteer in the area for 40 years and we often get a 'new boy' turning up - invariably, over the past 25 years it was Pete.
We looked after and monitored bird and mammal boxes, carried out surveys and went out on work parties. He and his wife were founder members of the Hereford Badger Group, serving on the first committee, holding several positions over the years and took on the chairmanship overnight when Alan King was suddenly killed in a road accident.
Peter rescued animals, manned fundraising stalls as well as using his computer and management skills. He was a pleasure to volunteer with and I was hoping to join him more often when I retired.
He will be sorely missed by many people.
Pete Barley, Walford
