A couple who met at the site of a terrible plane crash nearly 70 years ago are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on July 1st.

Stan and Mary Fryer met when they both went to see the crash site on January 7th, 1944 at Langstone. Both crew members were killed. Although Stan was only 16 this incident would have a huge impact on his life, Mary caught Stan's eye and he knew she was the girl for him. He sent a note with a friend to ask her to meet him at the village social and the rest, as they say, is history.

Stan was born in Llangarron in 1927 and has lived in the village all his life. Now both in their eighties they have recently moved into Fonteine Court in Ross.

Mary was born in Llanwarne and worked for a local farmer doing odd jobs. It was her half-day, she had just finished washing up when she heard the sound of the plane crashing. She rode her bike to see what had happened and so, of course, remembers exactly what she was doing the day she met Stan.

The couple courted for over six years before Mary agreed to marry Stan, she said she wanted to be completely sure.
