In August’s message I talked about home security and ‘lighting up’ to reduce the risk of your home being burgled. As we move into autumn, the same message is still applicable. If you home appears to be occupied, burglar’s will normally target somewhere else, or leave the area completely. A simple timer switch is all you need to activate your household lighting when you are not there.

Whilst Herefordshire is a safe place to live, let’s not give a thief a chance. Building upon your home security, your local Safer Neighbourhood Team can offer you a Smartwater security kit for your home or business for £20-00 for your home and £32-50 for a farm or small business. The kit includes all the registration forms and the warning posters. I use one at home and it is very easy to use. To find details of your local team please go to www.westmercia.police.uk and look for your local policing area.

Like me, many of you are probably starting to sort your gardens out for the end of the year. Thieves are still being vigilant and looking for things to steal. Remember to lock away your power and hand tools to protect them.

Can I take the opportunity to remind to be weary of Rogue Trade and don’t let them trick you. They normally target vulnerable people, so if you see strange vehicles or people at a vulnerable neighbour’s house and you have any concerns, take the registration number and description of the people there. Anyone with information about such traders can ring the police on 101 or Herefordshire Councils Trading Standards Team on 01432 276000.

Finally, Watch Schemes. If you are interested in setting up a watch or just want more information, then email Paul Crumpton for details [email protected] or by telephone on 01905 727402.
