A LOCAL primary school has been recognised by ‘The Sunday Times’ as one of the best in the country.

The Sunday Times praised Walford Nursery and Primary School for being a vibrant, forward-thinking community where innovation meets care, and where every child is given the tools and confidence to succeed.

It added that this is not just academically, but as compassionate, resilient individuals ready to make a difference.

Walford Nursery & Primary School was ranked second in the West Midlands category and 27th nationally in The Sunday Times Best Primary Schools 2026.

The Sunday Times notes that the team at the school prides itself on creating an environment where exceptional teaching and learning flourish every day and added: “Their ambitious curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and ensure that every child achieves their very best.

“All staff have high expectations for learners, and their teaching for mastery approaches ensures deep understanding and lasting success across all subjects.”

The Sunday Times also acknowledges that innovation is at the heart of what Walford does and added: “As a sector-leading school in computing and STEM, (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) they provide cutting-edge opportunities for pupils to explore technology and science in meaningful ways.

“They are proud to be an Ogden Trust Science Hub, championing excellence in science education and sharing best practice across the county.

“Strong partnerships with local businesses and community organisations enrich learning, connecting classroom experiences to the wider world and preparing pupils well for the future.”

The Sunday Times stated that what truly sets this school apart is their relational practice: where every teacher is a teacher of every pupil at Walford.

“All staff believe that strong relationships underpin great learning and work tirelessly to ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and challenged, it added. “This ethos creates a culture of belonging and ambition, where children are empowered to aim high and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Louise George, headteacher said that the school is absolutely delighted to learn of its success in the Sunday Times Best Primary Schools 2026 listing and added: “We strive to create an environment where every child feels valued and inspired to achieve their very best, both academically and personally.

“Whilst awards and rankings are wonderful acknowledgements, our greatest pride comes from seeing our children flourish and develop a lifelong love of learning.

“We will continue to focus on providing exceptional education and opportunities for all our pupils, ensuring that every child leaves us confident, capable, and ready for the next stage of their journey.’

Paul Deneen, chairman of the school governors said: “This wonderful recognition is a testament to outstanding leadership, hard work and dedication. Our whole school community, incredible pupils, committed staff and supportive families make Walford a wonderful place to learn and grow.”

Last year the school was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ by the Ofsted, the education watchdog in one its final one-word classifications.

The school was judged on the quality of its education; pupil’s behaviour and attitudes, children’s personal development, its leadership and management and its early years provision.
