John Kyrle High School pupil Samantha Griffiths became County Champion in the 100m and 200m sprints, for the third consecutive year at the Hereford County Athletics Championships held on Sunday, May 10th.

The 14 year old led from the blocks in the Under 17 100m race, to win Gold in a time of 12.6s achieving a new Personal Best and qualifying for selection in this years English Schools Championships to be held in Sheffield. Samantha ran well in the 200m race to secure her second Gold of the day.

Samantha said: "I am very excited about these results and having just missed out on English Schools qualifying last year it is so satisfying to meet it this year".

Samantha works hard, training three times a week in Cheltenham, with her sprint coach Margaret Davis.

She has also recently gained a UK Athletics Licence to coach 8 to 13 year olds in athletics.

Samantha travels all over the country competing and always updates her PE teacher, Mrs Claire Godwin and Head of Year, Mr Chris Elias, with her results. Their support and encouragement is always appreciated.

The Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire have recently provided training equipment and in 2008, she received a bursary from Ready Steady Win and is hoping for their continued support in 2009.

Samantha is very grateful for any additional support to help her achieve her long-term goal of a GB vest in her chosen sport.
