Pupils at Brampton Abbotts School in Ross-on-Wye have transformed a very useful, but not very attractive shipping container into a piece of art.
The container seemed like an economical and secure way to gain more storage on school grounds several years ago at Brampton Abbotts CE Primary School.
The ‘Green Container’, as it became known by the school community, certainly fulfilled its brief. However, Headteacher Dan Brearey felt that there was an opportunity for learning being missed. After a lot of research, he found an artist, Sarah Delahoy, who had carried out work with other local schools on large scale art projects. They met and agreed a way forward.
Over the past few weeks, children, Sarah and even some of the staff have worked on the project. Two sides of the container, visible to the playground, were targeted. The front doors have had an angel wing design created in white on a black background. Each child in the school designed an image of something that made them feel happy. The results were then copied onto the container by the children, creating the unique patterned design.
The side panel of the container was designed by Rowling Class (Years 5 and 6); children took it in turns to create alien characters that were then transferred to the container which they decorated in small groups using special paint pens.
Mr Brearey, said; “We are so pleased with the results. This was an opportunity for our children to take part in a collectively produced piece of public art. The results, as I’m sure you’ll agree, are a huge improvement on the original ‘Green Container’!”
