WHAT the Dickens – A Christmas Carol is all set for a modern twist this week!
Haberdashers' Monmouth Senior School are presenting the writer's festive classic in aid of local charities in the school chapel (Almshouse Street) on Thursday and Friday (November 20-21).
The play, specially adapted for the production by Welsh playwright Chris Harris, runs for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and audiences can enjoy mince pies and mulled wine during the evening.
The non-profit performances will raise funds for Maggie’s, the cancer support charity, and the Monmouth Foodbank.
Kate Callaghan, a former member of staff now working with the Foodbank, will be helping coordinate donations.
Audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will not only support those in need but also make a special appearance in the production itself.
Charles Dickens, who stayed several times in Ross-on-Wye, originally wrote A Christmas Carol to inspire generosity and compassion — a message that still rings true today.
The novella, written in 1843, tells the story of elderly miser Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, and in the process of witnessing the problems of Victorian society caused by heartless capitalism, is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.
Dickens’ work is even credited with shaping the modern Christmas we celebrate today.
A Haberdashers' Monmouth spokesperson said: "As an independent school, we are proud to give something back to our local community through this modern and imaginative adaptation, featuring a talented cast of students, many taking on multiple roles.
"All that’s missing now is you — our audience! Your presence is your starring role. Join us for an evening of festive storytelling, community spirit, and Christmas cheer.
"Let’s fill the chapel with kindness, laughter, and a touch of Dickensian magic."
Shows are Thursday at 7.30pm and Friday 5pm and 7.30pm, with tickets available from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk
