Ross Tennis Centre's Mens 'A' and Ladies 'A' teams were in action at home on Sunday morning. The men were entertaining Manor Park 'B' team from Malvern, always a difficult fixture, whilst the Ladies were playing Bewdley Tennis Club, both teams gaining promotion to Division One of the Herefordshire and Worcester Winter League last season.

Playing at first pair for the Men's team were Josh Gilmour and Chris Friend getting the side off to a great start by comfortably beating Manor Parks first pair 6-2, 6-4.

Unfortunately, new pairing Jo Taylor and Tom Shotton, making his debut for the 'A' team, lost a close match 4-6, 5-7 to the opposition's second couple. However, their form improved when they played their second match and they overwhelmed their opponents winning 6-2, 6-1.

Whilst this match was in progress it looked as though Chris and Josh were cruising to victory until a lapse in concentration saw them drop the second set and were a break of serve down in the decisive third. However, at 5-6 down and with their opponents serving for the match, the home pair were able to get the break, and run away with the tie break 7-0. An overall 3-1 win resulted, a fine start to the season.

The Ladies team had a last minute change to the side as one of the players had to pull out of the match due to a horse standing on her foot! Team captain Rosie Farr stepped in and partnered Heather Peachey and playing at first pair were Gaynor Raine and Ellie Vicary.

The first round of matches saw the new partnership of Ellie and Gaynor take a set to get familiar with each others game but then never looked back as they stormed through their matches 7-6, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0. Heather and Rosie also went to a tie break in the first set of their opening match, which they subsequently won, and went on to win the second set 7-5.

Against the oppositions first pair they couldn't find a way through some stern defensive play and lost the match 1-6, 2-6. An overall 3-1 win was achieved by the team, a great start to life in Division One.

The Mens 'B' team were also in action on Sunday, playing away to Clifton-on-Teme. Playing for Ross Tennis Centre were, Jamie Farr partnering Steve Hicks and Richard Jones playing alongside Ed Edwards.

The first round of matches saw contrasting scorelines. Whilst Ed and Richard brushed aside their opponents 6-0, 6-0, Jamie and Steve were involved in an epic match which resulted in them winning the first set 6-4, lose the second 4-6 before finally being edged out in the third 5-7 despite having a match point!

The second round of matches saw a more straight forward scoreline favouring the Ross side. Ed and Richard carried on their good form winning 6-4, 6-4 whilst Jamie and Steve came back from the disappointment of the close loss and recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win, therefore an overall 3-1 win was achieved.

The Ladies 'B' team, who had an excellent Summer Season which saw them win Division Four, travelled to Woolhope for their first Winter League match.

Sue Humble partnered Lyn Weinhardt and Val Davies teamed up with Lynn O' Driscoll. Unfortunately, only Sue and Lyn could manage a win so a 3-1 loss resulted but it is still early days in the Season.
