The South Herefordshire group of Extinction Rebellion (XR) is holding a get together on Monday, July 22nd, at St Mary’s Hall in Ross, between 7-9pm, so that people can find out the many different ways they could support the next wave of national action in the autumn.
Kristina Jamieson, the co-ordinator of the South Herefordshire Group told the Ross Gazette: “The first local meeting this year was a huge success. Over 70 people attended to find out what XR hopes to achieve. People from Ross then joined the wider Herefordshire Action group and took part in the London protests in April, where Oxford Circus, Marble Arch, Parliament Square and Waterloo Bridge were blockaded for several days. The impacts are still being felt. The climate emergency has moved up the agenda and more and more people are talking about the need to act now.”
Kristina explained, “The Herefordshire crew were all at Oxford Circus, surrounding the pink boat alongside others from Bristol and Wales. Some of us were arrested. Some of us were there simply to make up the crowd, talking to all the shoppers on Oxford Street. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many like-minded people who really care about what’s happening.”
She said that XR is not party political and they welcome people from all walks of life and ages to reduce carbon emissions to ZERO by 2025 and establish a Citizen’s Assembly to guide the changes.
This month’s gathering in Ross will be a chance to find out what more needs to be done. Kristina says, “People with all sorts of skills could help, for example making banners, baking cakes, writing articles or organising meetings. We all need to do whatever we can, with whatever we have. Everyone will be very welcome.”
