A large scale rescue of hundreds of coarse fish, which had become trapped in the Ross flood alleviation scheme, at the Homs Road car park is taking place this morning, Friday, April 8th.
A team from the Environment Agency iss overseeing the recue which is being carried out by staff from the charity, The Wye and Usk Foundation.
A team from Balfour Beatty, on behalf of Herefordshire Council was also in place due to the amount of health and safety legislation as it is in a public place.
The town’s flood alleviation tunnel runs between the Homs Road and Kings Acre car parks.
Balfour Beatty Living Places have launched an investigation into the cause of the problem. and will be looking at ways to ensure a similiar incident does not happen again.
The Environment Agency believe the fish became trapped around March 29th when water levels in the River Wye rose and washed a significant number of fish into the outlet chamber.
A resident told the Ross Gazette that although fish often get caught in the chamber there should be a system in place which allows them to be released back into the river again.
