The Met Office reported on Monday that Hereford had seen the largest amount of rain over the previous 24 hours, 64.6mm was recorded. However the Observer in Charge at Ross Weather Station, Dr Andrew Rogers recorded 72.6mm – a record for a single 24 hour period.

It is not in doubt that the amount of rain was exceptional and once again local residents had to face the threat of flooding as well as difficult driving conditions. There was a landslide at Llangarron, at the Llangarron Cross junction with the A4137. There was also concerns for traffic on the road through Fownhope and Mordiford. One person put a message on the Ross Gazette Facebook page to warn other drivers. She said:?"Aqua planing is really bad, and lots of DEEEEP puddles, some cars have already stalled going through them."

One local mum was on the school run from Ross to Ashperton School on the Ledbury Road. She told the Gazette:?"A bank of water had come down off the fields. The owner of the post office was slowing down lorries, whose tyres were causing waves of water to lap up against his shop. We turned around for home, along with many others."

Residents at Smallbrook Gardens, who were badly affected by the flooding in July, called local Councillor Andrew Atkinson. He called Cllr Colin Gray who is now the town council's emergency co-ordinator and alerted the fire brigade and Herefordshire Housing. He also asked Amey to be on stand by to bring more sand bags and look at various problems. Amey came immediately with a full team of workers and did a lot of work to ease the problems. There have been many comments on Facebook regarding the flood alleviation scheme and whether it was effective.

Judy Baugh said:?"What happened to the Ross Flood Alleviation Scheme? Was it money wasted or what. Poor people. Not fair."

However some people have pointed out the rainfall over the past few months has been exceptional and many of the areas which have been affected were not included in the Flood Alleviation Scheme.

Peter Martin said that it was 'heartwarming' to hear about everyone rushing to help. He added it is time to ask what can be done to prevent, or at least protect people from flooding in the future.
