Ross Cricket Club hosted Canon Frome CC in a friendly to open the season at The Park on Sunday April 17th. Winning the toss, home skipper Andrew Stacey elected to bat on a firm April pitch that benefitted from the recent dry weather.
Kit Smith (8-2-30-4) opened the bowling for the visitors and had Ross in trouble, after an edged four from the third ball, he had one of the opening batsman back in the pavilion by the end of the first over. Number three batsman Charles Hiram (62) anchored the Ross innings, but it was Gabriel Warwick who played the innings of the day with an elegant 130 which include 18 fours and 4 sixes. A flurry of wickets at the end of the innings resulted in a total of 247 for 7 from 40 overs.
Chasing six an over, Canon Frome were always just behind the run rate and came up 14 runs short of the target. Kit Smith followed up his bowling stint with a top score of 55 not out, but his partners could not help him to see the visitors home. The Ross bowling did a good containing job, but lacked penetration and were guilty of keeping the visitors in the game by giving away 41 wides.
It was a pleasing start to the season which also gave plenty of signposts for improvement.
