MADAM, We would like to express our thanks to the Ross Rural Parish Council for their wreath commemorating Remembrance Sunday, placed at the Greytree War Memorial. Although there is no longer an official ceremony at the memorial, its significance within the history and heritage of Ross, particularly with the pending centenary of the commencement of WWI, remains as strong as ever and the ongoing commitment of the Parish Council is greatly appreciated.
Names of many local families are on the memorial, which was originally dedicated in 1918, following its commissioning by the original owners of Greytree Lodge, the St Helier Davies sisters, whose father was the Rector of Brampton Abbotts and tragically drowned in an accident on the River Wye.
We are also indebted to Mr and Mrs Hailes, who now live in Silver Birch Cottage the annex to Greytree Lodge and regularly and caringly tend for the Memorial garden. The annex was constructed to accommodate the Helier Davies' son on his return to the village after military service.
Although the memorial is technically owned by the Freeholder of Greytree Lodge i.e. ourselves, we do consider it as belonging to the community of Greytree and Ross as a whole.
John and Irene White, Ross.
