TWO local organisations are among the nine groups that will be sharing £50,000 of grant funding to provide inclusive social activities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
The grants have been provided by Herefordshire Council and Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion to provide activities that range from horse riding and assisted roller skating to cricket and activity days.
All the activity sessions have been designed to cater for the needs of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and will enable the children to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills outside of school or college.
The local recipients are Whitchurch-based Trewen Meadows Ltd which provides group horse riding, hands-on horse care and social activities for children and young people with special needs aged between five and 18 years .
Through its equine-based therapy sessions, participants experience profound transformation—gaining strength, confidence, and new skills while developing emotionally and socially.
Woodcraft Folk at the Biblins Youth Campsite on the Doward is another grant recipient which will provide residential summer camps and create a unique, back-to-basics camping experience and an adventure that includes exploration, and outdoor learning.
Other grant recipients include Little Play World and Marches Family Network which provides play sessions for special needs children in their local communities.
Councillor Ivan Powell, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We’re delighted to fund these activities so that children and young people with special needs and disabilities can take part in inclusive fun activities in a safe and supportive learning environment.”
West Mercia’s Police and crime commissioner John Campion, added: “The skills learnt in childhood play a vital role in shaping a young person’s future. I’m pleased to be helping ro ensure children with these conditions have access to a range of safe and fun inclusive activities, alongside their families.”
