Herefordshire Council’s Building Control team have won Best Purpose-Built Accommodation award at the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

The award was presented for the Eign Gate project, in which the Council worked with Lola Property Investment and Hook Mason Architects to convert the historic building into student accommodation comprising 71 individual en-suite units.

The Building Control team carried out weekly inspections and liaised with the developer to keep the project on track and minimise any construction issues. Despite the main contractor going into liquidation, the positive relationship between Building Control and on-site parties allowed the client to take over smoothly and for work to continue as planned.

Cllr Elissa Swinglehurst, Cabinet Member Environment, said: “The building control team, developer and design team are to be congratulated on winning this award. Eign Gate was a significant project and the officers put in a lot of hard work to make it a success. It is great that the standard and quality of this development have been recognised. It is something that the whole team can feel proud about.”

More than 900 leading construction industry figures attended the ceremony at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London to celebrate best practice, quality, and exemplary standards in construction.

Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive said: "I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile."
