250 local people went on ten coaches to the Put it to the People Rally in London, joining 12,941 people from the county who have signed the Parliamentary petition to revoke Article 50 which has now reached five million signatures – the largest ever.
Herefordshire for Europe is the umbrella group for Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster and Hay amongst many other towns and together with pro Europe organisations in Worcester, organised ten coaches to join the rally in London.
Herefordshire for Europe represents the growing number of people who think that a mistake was made at the time of the referendum nearly three years ago. Democracy never stands still and what was said then is not what the people are saying now with opinion polls now showing that 6 in 10 people believe that remaining in the EU is better for families, farmers and the nation as a whole.
Guy Wilkinson, chair of Herefordshire for Europe, said “democracy is never frozen in time. It means that the evidence is now clear that the majority of people are fed up with the mess of the past three years and now want to end it by putting it back to the people for their final decision. Thirteen thousand people in the county have now called for the UK to continue in the European Union and we should listen to them”
Sue Penn, who organised the coaches to the ‘Put it to the People Rally’ said: “I was amazed at the number of people who wanted to give up their Saturday and pay £20 to come to the rally to have their voices heard. I had to keep putting on extra coaches to meet the demand”
Polly Ernest, a long term activist with Herefordshire for Europe, said: “It was an extraordinary day in London with people from all over the country. There were up to two million people and there was no trouble at all. People just wanted to let our politicians know that the British people want to continue to be in the EU in friendship and for peace.
We don’t want to be isolated and we are completely against the aggression and hatred towards EU citizens here who have contributed so much to our wellbeing.”See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
