Oscar Saxelby-Lee is starting a new treatment today, Friday, October 11th, after his most recent bone marrow results shed some light on his body’s response to the bridging chemo. ?Oscar's family have said that Oscar’s medical team have decided to offer him the chance of eliminating the remaining cancer cells through a donor lymphocyte infusion. This is where they infuse frozen T cells from his donor into his blood with the hope it will tackle the remaining ‘Oscar cells’ that contain disease. The family have been warned that he is at very high risk of Graft verses host disease that can be life threatening.
His parents have posted on their Facebook page: “There is also no guarantee it will work but we must be optimistic.... We’d be going crazy if we weren’t!”
Oscar is at risk either way but if the infusion fails it means there is still another opportunity to save him with the CarT therapy.
This weekend the Ross family of Oscar are holding a Halloween disco at Ross Sports Centre and many local residents have already donated through the fund-raising page or in collecting tins which are located at many places around the town.
His parents are really grateful for everything which has been done so far but they are pleading with people not to stop.
They said: “Please do not stop fundraising. If you are holding an event or attending one, please still go ahead. £500,000 is enough to cover the treatment and care Oscar would require if all went to plan. Now we need to make sure that we have contingency funds available should Oscar need more care or have a more complicated recovery whilst there. As we all know, this journey hasn’t gone smoothly so we must be prepared for any additional hurdles.”
They said having this funding will allow them to move very quickly.
