Most teams have their mythical figures, immortals whose memory lives on. Occasionally, they return to help save their former colleagues in their hour of need. Third from bottom of the N4 Financial Solutions Hereford and Gloucester League Division Two, and facing league hotshots Lansdown B, Ross Men's 2nd Team found themselves requiring supernatural support last Saturday.
Cometh the hour, cometh the men. First up, Charlie Exton, former bad boy turned Buddhist priest. Second up, Rufus Davies, with a stick previously owned by Lord Baden-Powell. They strode onto the John Kyrle pitch casting no shadow and making no sound (except Charlie, who shouted quite a lot), re-joining the Ross old guard of Edward Peck, James Adamson, Andy Cross, Wilem Haagen and Tony Faulkner, hopes were high and spirits were lifted.
The early omens were good. Geraint Morris went close, before scoring from an identical position ten minutes later (but only after Lansdown had scored two). Nick Clarke was proving a significant presence, and Chris Chalk and Sean Couch were certainly making an impression. From a Ben Da Cunha ball into the 'D', Cross slotted home (but only after Lansdown had scored another two).
In the second half, Richard Stewart was the provider for Ross' third strike and Cross' second (but only after Lansdown had scored two more). Despite the excellence of Seb Sullivan in the Ross goal, Lansdown sneaked a seventh, wantonly destroying the symmetry of the game. So, the moral of the story? Legends can lose too, 7 - 3.
