AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report a highly variable entry of finished cattle for its livestock auction in Ross-on-Wye on September 1, with plain types selling up to 320p per kilogramme and better sorts selling up to 430p per kilogramme.

Auctioneer Richard Williams suggests that many more finished cattle could have easily been sold to meet the demand from buyers.

The top vendors were DM & CS Andrews, of Glen Court Farm and DE & SJ Cheacker, of Ostbridge Manor Farm.

A similar entry of cull cows of average quality overage sold to a firm demand. The auctioneer pointed out there was a lack of top quality sorts in the entry, but better cows were selling up to 278p per kilogramme.

The overall average price of cull cows was £1,265 per head. The top vendors were C Simcock & Sons of Green Farm and G C Breakwell of Hazelfield Farm.

A slightly reduced entry of lambs met a much better trade than expected. Previously the average prices were well below 300p per kilogramme, but this auction saw the overall average rise to 307p per kilogramme, “Which was great news,” Mr Williams said.

Better lambs sold particularly well up to 339p per kilogramme with heavier lambs selling well up to £175. The overall average was £135 per head which was up on last year’s average of £130 per head.

The top vendors were HH Williams & Son of Red Barn Farm and D Jones of Hill Farm.

A good entry of cull ewes and rams sold to a very good trade throughout. Meated sorts sold between £180 and £200. However a few speckled ewes reduced the overall average for ewes being £136.

The top vendors were N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm and JE Bennion of Hayes Farm.
