A SHORTER entry of very commercial finished cattle continued to meet a fast trade at Ross-on-Wye’s livestock auction on Monday, June 22.

Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that demand remained consistent throughout the sale with steers topping at £2,672 per head from Messrs DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm.

Cattle also remained keenly sought after by retail buyers with prices ranging from 340p – 360p per kilogramme.

There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers forward sold well either side of 330p/kg.

The overall average price of finished cattle was £2,146. The other top vendor was C Simcock & Sons of The Green Farm.

A larger entry of spring lambs met strong competition from start to finish peaking at £206, representing 452p per kilogramme.

Lambs topped at 452p per kilogramme for a run of Texel cross from Messrs J M Godsall & Son of Moor Court.

The entry was dominated by heavier sorts with all those weighing in excess of 43kg lambs traded between £180 and £205.

The auctioneer William Probert commented that more lambs could have easily been sold to this electric trade. The overall average price of lambs was £173p/head.

The top vendor was N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm.

A good entry of cull ewes and rams met strong demand from buyers topping at £192 from Messrs DA Evans and Partners of Pantygoitre Farm. Continental Cross ewes also met strong demand and treaded between £170 and £190 per head.

Leaner sorts of ewes generally changed hands between £140 and £160 per head. Small Hill ewes traded around the £120 to £140 mark. The overall average price of an ewe was £152 per head.
