AUCTIONEERS RG and RB Williams report a good entry at the livestock market in. Ross-on-Wye on July 14 where young bulls sold at £2,853 and heifers to £2,747.

A quality run of Lim cross steers and heifers sold between 415p and 430p per kilogramme.

In general, all well fleshed Continentals sold between 370p and 400p per kilogramme.

Auctioneer William Probert states that more cattle is required to meet the demand from buyers.

A short entry of cull cows, with mostly leaner sorts forward, peaked at £1,980 for a nice Lim cross cow from DM & CM Andrews topping at 277p per kilogramme. Leaner sorts generally traded between 180p and 220p per kilogramme. The overall average price of cull cows was £1,343 per head with the top vendors being DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm and WJ & EA Lewis of Gilfach Fawr Farm.

A nice entry of lambs met a fast trade peaking at £180 per head with well fleshed Continentals selling between 350p and 366p per kilogramme. The strongest demand was shown on heavy weights selling between £170 and £180 per head.

There is a big difference between lean and well finished lambs with lean lambs trading 20p to 30p kilogramme less. The auctioneer observed that more lambs could have been sold to this trade.

The top vendors were N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm and S P Merrick, of Jug Green Farm.

A shorter entry of cull ewes and rams met a blistering trade topping at £213 for ewes and £230 for tups. Leaners sorts sold between £100 and £140 with well meated ewes selling between £160 and £213 with good continentals also peaking at £213.

The top vendor was Monnow Marquees at Hill Farm.
