A NICE entry of very commercial finished cattle continued to meet a fast trade at the livestock market in Ross-on-Wye on Monday, June 29.

Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that demand for cattel remained consistent throughout the sale with heifers topping at £2,825 per head from Messrs DM & CS Andrews of Glen Court Farm.

Cattle remained keenly sought after by retail buyers with prices ranging from 340p – 360p per kilogramme.

There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers forward which sold well either side of 330p per kilogramme.

The auctioneer Williams Probert said that more cattle would have been sold to this trade and more will be wanted for the forthcoming weeks.

The overall average price of finished cattle was £1,983.

A larger entry of spring lambs met strong competition from start to finish peaking at £205 representing 424p per kilogramme.

Meat and weight were the calm of the day trading between 410p - 424ppkg, meat is key with it paying to put that extra finish on lambs.

Lambs topped at 424p per kilogramme for a run of Texel Cross from Messrs N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm.

The entry was dominated by heavier sorts with all those weighing more than 43kg trading between £180 and £205.

Meat is key with spring lambs with buyers for all weights and classes.

The overall average price of lambs was £190p/head.

A good entry of cull ewes and rams met strong demand topping at £210 from Messrs HH Williams & Son of Red Barn Farm.

Continental cross ewes continued to trade between £180 and £210 per head while leaners sorts of ewes generally changed hands between £140 and £160 per head while small hill ewes traded around the £130 mark.

The overall average price of ewes was £164. The top vendors were VM & DJ Gunter, of Cowmeadow Farm and R Box of Long Acre smallholding.
