Local artist, Belinda Adams has illustrated a new book by talented author, Catherine Gardner called Pyewacket’s Pocket Book of Rhymes.

This intriguing publication is a collection of Cath’s humerous twist on well-known nursery rhymes alongside Belinda’s drawings which are based on the style of early woodcuts.

She has studied all types of woodcuts from their beginning in 1461, as book illustrations, up to the 20th century, however she particularly liked the simpler designs of the earlier works. This is due to their almost childlike qulality, with seeming disregard, at times, for shading and true shape. This is the first time Belinda has illustrated a published book, although she has illustrated her own work.

Belinda has succeded in creating her own woodcut style, which is very striking and perfectly complements the Gothic leaning of the powerful imagery Cath has used in her verses.

The book will leave you with your spine tingling, your ribs tickled and the knock of horror from ancient practises at your mind’s door.

The illustrations demonstrate a lively imagination where unusual ideas are part of her particular abilities as a woman with Asperger’s Syndrome.
