Viv Lucas from Brampton Abbotts has been making homemade jams and chutneys as a hobby for a number of years, and in the last two years has started making marmalade.

Last year she entered the Worlds Original Marmalade Awards for the first time, in the Homemade section, and scooped a well deserved Bronze Award for her Seville Orange Marmalade.

Entering again, with this year’s batch of marmalade, she achieved a brilliant Silver Award.

Her judgements were 2 out of 2 for Appearance, 5 out of 5 for Colour, 5 out of 6 for consistency, texture, quality and 6 out of 7 for flavour and aroma, a total of 18 out of 20 points, just 1.5 points short of a gold.

The World’s Original Marmalade Awards are held at Dalemain House, Cumbria and attract thousands of entrants from all over the world.

There are various categories including Artisan or Hotel, Restaurant and Bed and Breakfast. The Homemade section alone attracted thousands of entrants which puts Viv’s achievement into perspective.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
