Dear Editor,

The rugby team in the recent archive picture from 1935 (Rugby teams line up. page 13, Ross Gazette 13/12/17) is almost certainly the senior rugby team of Ross Grammar School.

The boy sitting bottom right of the picture was recognised by my mother (Barbara Sharpe née Phillips) as her older brother Wilfrid Phillips (born 1920 and so he would be 15 in the picture). Wilfrid was the son of H E Phillips Jewellers of 6 Gloucester Road. As well as playing rugby he was also very involved as a member of the Rowing Club.

Wilfrid died only seven years after this photograph was taken in December 1942 in World War II. He was on active service in Tunisia as part of No. 1 Commando and his name is on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial in that country.

My mother is not certain but thinks that the boy standing far right might be Dennis Mountford, son of Mr Mountford, a science master at the time at Ross Grammar (his other son was Roger). The boy at the back second from left may be called Ron but she is not sure of the surname.

John Martin, Ross-on-Wye.
