Motoring journalist, Tony Yates, recently tested the Peugeot 108 GT Line 1.2.

This week’s road test put me in the driving seat of the Peugeot 108 GT Line. First off, I have to say I’m not really a big fan of the small eco car, but then again I did own an eco-warrior a few years back which was a little ‘ordinary’. Although I have to say, the 108 GT Line from Peugeot looks far from ordinary. In fact, it looks pretty smart.

With that in mind, let’s waste no more time and get on with the review. Firstly, you will notice that it’s chic, small, and actually not that bad looking. Plus, on the inside, it’s funky and well set out with minimal fuss. Actually thinking about it, I like both the outside and the inside.

Power and Efficiency:

My test car was fitted with a 3-cyl 1.2 petrol engine, which actually helped the little 108 dash about like a scalded cat, meaning it’s pretty nippy for city driving or doing the kid’s school run.

If you are interested, then you can expect a 0-62 time of 10.9sec and a decent top speed of around 106mph. Fuel consumption is also an important part of buying a small car, and I’m happy to report that the little 108 achieved a combined consumption of 60mpg. Plus, it has the addition of 116Nm of torque, which is more than enough to keep you progressing at a steady pace.

What is exciting though, is how that little three cylinder sounds. Ok, it’s not Ferrari sounding, but it does sound kind of ‘racy’. Then reality slips in and you remember the 108 it’s not about performance, it’s about saving you money and preserving the planet.

On the road:

The 108 is a very playful city car that is safe, but also practical in the five door format. Of course, I wanted to find out more, so I went for a brisk drive into some of the more challenging corners. I’m happy to report that the 108 did a pretty good job of keeping it all together.

Actually, even when the pace picked up, I still found the steering to be direct and well balanced. Also, being small, I expected the 108 to be a little ‘bouncy’, but thankfully the suspension does a great job of keeping you comfortable on many different road surfaces.

Equipment, Safety and Technology:

The 108 offers a first-rate experience that is achieved through a combination of interior quality, attention to detail and a wide range of equipment such as; DAB Radio, automatic headlights, and LED daytime running lights. Plus as you move up the model range, the list gets better.

For instance, my test car was the ‘GT Line’ so you get additional treatments such as; 15” ‘S Line’ alloy wheels, gloss black door mirrors, black rear spoiler, tinted rear windows, rear exhaust finisher, black leather seating, 7" multifunction colour touch screen, gloss black interior ambiance with red detailing and automatic air conditioning.

To sum up:

I actually like the Peugeot 108, because it gives you all the things you need from a small city car. To be honest, it really is a breath of fresh air from Peugeot. So, if you are looking for a city car with five doors, then you are almost certainly looking in the right place.
