Year 1 children at Much Birch Primary School recently visited Aconbury Woods to take part in a Teaching Trees session run by the Royal Forestry Society.

The RFS Teaching Trees project works with primary schools offering educational visits to local woodlands. The session was linked to the national curriculum and gave the opportunity for the children to learn about trees and the local woodland in a fun and practical way.

The weather was on their side and they enjoyed a morning of glorious sunshine whilst the children identified tree species through their leaves; learnt to tell how old a tree is by counting the rings; pretended to be a tree, representing the roots, trunk, branches and leaves. The children ended the morning by playing a tree hugging game.

The children are very much looking forward to going back for a follow up session later this term.
