Members of Peterstow WI hit a musical note at their December meeting when they had a visit from David Wornham. David is known for his ‘Tuneful Tubes’ and he certainly showed his skill with many types of wind instruments – 49 of which he brought along to demonstrate.
David described his talk as “a light-hearted worldwide history” and there was genuine amusement and amazement at his ability to get tunes from all sorts of instruments, ancient and modern. He explained how he began playing at a young age but then stopped for 40 years until retiring when he rediscovered the enjoyment of music, now playing in three bands. David took a musical tour through instruments from an early horn, through trumpets, trombones via conche shells and a didgeridoo. He even showed how musical notes can be obtained from household objects such as a hosepipe, watering can and plastic piping.
The ladies present wondered how he practised so many instruments and asked what his neighbours thought – to which the reply was “I don’t know they keep moving!” This interesting and amusing talk ended with a tuneful euphonium and, in keeping with the season, David donned a Santa hat and played some Christmas Carols for everyone to sing along to.
Peterstowe W.I is a friendly, welcoming group who meet every month in Bridstow Hall, generally the first Wednesday at 2.30pm. Guests are welcome so if you would like to come along or to find out more contact President Christine Bushell on 01989 730508.
