ROSS-ON-WYE carnival is due to make its triumphant return in seven weeks’ time after a long hiatus since its last outing prior to the covid pandemic, writes Lottie Boyland.
The event, which was previously organised by a community group, has not taken place since 2019, due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and a lack of funds thereafter.
However, Ross Town Council have confirmed the carnival will make its long-awaited comeback this year on August 1.
The committee behind the carnival have asked the public to nominate who they believe deserves to be the carnival prince and princess.
The winners will ride the royal float in the grand parade as well as presiding over the festivities at Rope Walk.
They will also assist the mayor and deputy mayor in judging the parade categories. The winners will be chosen by the event sponsors.
To nominate someone to receive the honour of carnival royalty, please visit the town council’s website. Winners must be available on August 1 and be of primary school age.
Other competitions will also be open, and grants of up to £100 will be available to help groups create their entries.
The carnival has long been a prominent event in the town’s calendar, being held continuously every year since 1977 to 2019, but its roots date back to the late 19th century.
The revived walking parade will begin at station approach, finishing at the Rope Walk which will act as the main hub for the day’s entertainment. There, there will be many local businesses and craft vendors as well as a wide selection of food trucks and a public bar running by the riverside.
Rides and games will also be set up, making the event more than suitable for children and families. Entry to the carnival is also completely free of charge for all spectators.
