As acting chairman for the Town Council's Olympic Torch committee, I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make the event such a success. It was a team effort, but special mention should be made of Colin Gray, Julie Tyler, Caroline Utting, Mary Sinclair-Powell and the Mayor, David Ravenscroft.

However star of the show was the Council Town Clerk, Denise Mason. She played an "absolute blinder" in dealing with a myriad of problems from street closures, coach parking, road safety measures, police liaison, portable loos, ambulance services, bunting and all kinds of bureaucracy. The hire of stilt walkers and jugglers was a great success in keeping the crowds happy while waiting for the torch procession.

Congratulations to all who made it such a happy historic occasion for the hundreds of spectators and schoolchildren who attended.

Cllr. John Edwards
