A well organised and disciplined Ross display was too much for Kingswood, and Ross ran out comfortable winners in this 3rd round EDF Cup fixture.
Strong tackling around the rucks and in midfield ensured Kingswood were not able to develop their game and Ross slowly developed both territory and possession. On three occasions Ross established attacking lineouts in the Kingswood twenty two, both Ross jumpers Adam Clements and Matt Jones secured possession on every occasion however Ross were not able to convert this pressure into points.
Ross upped the tempo in the second half and within ten minutes Kingswood had infringed thirty yards out. Ali Rees converted the penalty to put Ross 3-0 ahead.
This score settled Ross down and from the kick off again set up quality possession, once again Kingswood infringed and from the penalty Simon Gwynne put Ross deep into the Kingswood twenty two, from the ensuing lineout the Kingswood lock forward managed to get a hand to the ball, but only proceeded to slap it down towards his own line. Gavin Oates was the quickest to react hacking the ball over the line. He outsprinted their scrum half and scored the first try of the game.
Ali Rees again converted and Ross were 10-0 up. Ross were now in complete control.
Kingswood did close the gap with a long penalty as Ross secured the win with 10 minutes remaining. Kingswood looked to run the ball from deep, Bas Parker stopped the move with a big tackle in midfield. From the ensuing ruck both Matt Redman and Wayne Williams secured the turnover, Simon Gwynne moved the ball blind and Chay Brine sent winger Ali Hunter-Blair clear. He stepped the fullback and coasted in to score, Ali Rees converted and Ross were 17-3 ahead. Ali Rees converted another penalty to give a final score of 20-3.
The Walford Timber man of the match was Adam Clements. Next Saturday, October 25th, Ross are at home to Brockworth in the league kick off 3pm.
