Preparations are well underway for a parkrun to start soon in Ross-on-Wye. This is a free 5k run (3.1 miles), starting at 9am every Saturday morning. The course will be by the riverside, starting near the Sports Centre. The café will be open for well-earned refreshments and chats afterwards.
Volunteers staff the event, and visitors are welcome, giving benefits to both health and local tourism. People often choose to visit somewhere where they can attend a parkrun, and this is a great opportunity to both spend time in and promote the beautiful area in which we live. The organisers say: “It is exciting that Ross-on-Wye is now part of a worldwide movement, parkrun is an international event, happening across the globe.”
Taking part in parkrun is a great way to build up fitness in a friendly and supportive environment. The local GP surgeries are supporting parkrun and are encouraging patients to get involved. Anyone can take part, and runners of all levels will be welcome. The NHS Couch to 5k app is a good way to build up your fitness in preparation, but it’s OK to walk or just do one lap. A volunteer always walks at the back, so no one comes last.
Most of the setup costs have been pledged already, but the organisers have not quite reached the funding target, so donations are most welcome. If you would like more information, or to volunteer to help at parkrun, please e-mail [email protected]
