PETERSTOW Women’s Institute recently celebrated its 86th anniversary in style.
It was decided that, for such a great milestone, there should be a party with fun and food.
It had to have a great deal of delicious food, including a variety of cakes and delicacies, and many cups of tea.
The party mood was maintained by games such as ‘Pass the Parcel’ with sweets and forfeits, and ‘Chinese Whispers’.
Many of the WI members had not played these games since childhood, but judging by the laughter it was a happy and memorable afternoon.
There was a competition to see who could create the best ‘Posy of flowers’ and after tea Amanda Cornes, expert flower arranger, judged the entries.
Jill Atkins was deemed the winner with her beautiful arrangement of flowers and herbs.
Amanda commented that all the arrangements were of a high standard. Peterstow WI was originally founded in December 1938 and held its meetings in Peterstow Village Hall. Today it meets on the first Wednesday of the month down the road at Bridstow Village Hall.
It has a full program of activities including a visit to a local farm in August, a talk about unusual antiques, tips on how to design a flower border and Christmas Lunch.
Last year the members hosted the visit of antiques expert and television star Kate Bliss, who has appeared on the BBC's Bargain Hunt, Flog It! She helped out at open meeting, which was organised by Peterstow WI, where she captivated guests with anecdotes and valuations in a hall that had been decked out with bunting.
The event concluded with an afternoon tea, complete with the customary rendition of Jerusalem.
