Street parties have traditionally been the centrepiece of celebrations marking VE Day anniversaries. And this year, the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day is set to see some of the biggest events. This is in part due to the movement of the May Day Bank Holiday from the Monday to the Friday, i.e. instead of Monday, May 4th being a public holiday, it was announced in June that instead this will move to Friday, May 8th or VE Day.
This will allow for a three day programme of commemorative events.
Many diaries and calendars, including the planner on the
wall of the Ross Gazette, give the wrong date for the Bank Holiday as they were probably printed before the change was announced.
VE Day commemorates the Allies accepting the surrender of Nazi Germany during the Second World War and the Ross-on-Wye and District Royal British Legion Branch is already making plans to mark VE Day and VJ day later in the summer.
