Local residents and camapigners have spoken about the result of the EU referendum this morning.

One resident commented: “This marks the start in a new chapter for our proud sovereign country.”

But Remain campaigner Anthea McIntyre has spoken of her regret over the decision made to leave the EU.

In Herefordshire the votes cast for Remain were 44,148 and 64,122 for Leave.

The total number of votes received was 108,336 and the turnout for Herefordshire was 78.36% (above the national average of 71.8%).

The total number of rejected ballot papers was 66.

MP Jesse Norman, who refused to state which side he was voting for, tweeted this morning: “Very high @eureferendum turnout in Herefordshire. I’d love to think my neutral leading of local public debate played a role.”

The Conservative MEP for the West Midlands Ms McIntyre added: “I am bitterly disappointed that the people of Britain have decided to try their luck outside the EU. I think it is a decision we and future generations may come to rue.

“The EU is far from perfect, but like many others I felt strongly that on balance we would be safer, stronger and better of by remaining a member.

“The British people have decided otherwise. A result is a result, however narrow, and now we must pull together as a party and a nation to get the best for Britain.

“I will do everything I can as an MEP to achieve a smooth transit out of the EU for Britain on the best possible terms. It will be hard going and there is a long road ahead, but that is now the task we face.”

Ross Gazette reader Beth Handyside tweeted after the Gazette revealed the local result: “If true I am devastated.”
