As the bad weather continues, many roads around Herefordshire are deteriorating, and more and more potholes are appearing.

Despite complaints from local people about the condition of Walford Road, Herefordshire Council have said that it does not meet the intervention criteria for repairs.

On the Ross Gazette Facebook page, we asked local people which roads in the area they felt were in the worst condition. Walford Road was by far the most frequent response among our readers.

Many people commented that they thought Walford Road is in a particularly bad state, and several others wrote that there are potholes all the way along the B4234, in the village of Walford itself, and all the way to Kerne Bridge.

Some people were also concerned about potholes appearing on the Morrisons roundabout, on Ledbury Road, in Bridstow near to Wilton Roundabout, at Palace Pound and on Archenfield Road.

A couple of local residents got in touch to say that their cars had been damaged by potholes. Chris Baverstock wrote:?“Hit a pot hole two weeks ago, completely ruined my alloy and punctured my tyre. Had to get the wheel sent off for repair. Applied for compensation for the damage, and the council didn’t want to know.”

Richard Mayo, the Herefordshire Council representative for West Ward told the Ross Gazette that he is aware that many people are concerned about Walford Road, and he has been pushing to get the road repaired. “Just because nothing has happened doesn’t mean that we (the local councillors) haven’t been trying,” he commented.

He added that he has been told by the County Council that budgets are low, and other roads in Herefordshire take priority.

However, he said that if local people contact the council to complain about Walford Road, this can only help the cause.

A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council told the Gazette:?“Herefordshire Council, working in partnership with Balfour Beatty Living Places, carries out regular inspections on all roads in Ross-on-Wye. Potholes that meet the intervention criteria set out by Herefordshire Council’s Highway Maintenance Plan will be repaired within set timescales.”

They continued: “At last review, Walford Road did not meet criteria for inclusion in the 2017/18 resurfacing programme, but additional inspections will take place within the next month.

“The programme for resurfacing works is yet to be finalised across the county. However, we can confirm that patching work to Old Nursery Close in Ross-on-Wye will take place in the new financial year.”

If you report a pothole, but find that it is not repaired, you can contact your Herefordshire Council representative, to chase the matter up.
