THE landlord of a pub with a memorable name in Upton Bishop, is to retire in July.
Chris Burgess, the owner of the Moody Cow said: “It was the name of the pub that attracted me to it in the first place. I saved the Moody Cow from being closed and boarded up in 2011.
“But now It is with a heavy heart that after 15 wonderful years, I have decided to retire. I will cease operating the Moody Cow after we have finished serving Sunday lunch on the July 19”.
Mr Burgess explained that there were a number of reasons why he has decided that this is the best time for him to store his knives, and for a moment, his pen too.
“It has been a joy and a privilege to share people’s birthdays, anniversaries, date nights and special occasions. I especially liked it when families have allowed me to cuddle their baby whilst they enjoy their meal.
“The other day, James came back to visit us, when I first comforted him, he was three months old, now he is twelve and as tall as me!
“I have been blessed with the most supportive, loyal and professional team, some have worked with me for over 12 years, others have left, then returned, all have made a lasting contribution to the reputation the Moody Cow has earned for quality and consistency,” he said.
Mr Burgess pointed out that Olivia was just 15 when she started working at the Moody Cow, “It was her first job. She found my exacting standards and relentless guidance a challenge,” he added. “She is 31 now, a teacher by profession and still comes back from time to time to help us out. In August I will be a guest at her wedding. There are many more that I can mention that have been on a similar journey.”
Mr Burgess said that Moody Cow Club Card and the pub’s vouchers can be redeemed until July 19 and after that they will still be honoured by James and Alina at the Loughpool Inn who will be continuing the authentic cooking theme by using fresh, local ingredients created with passion and care and added: “I’m sure the team at will not let you down.”
Mr Burgess posted a message to regular guests saying that he has accumulated many interesting items over the time, some of which he will retain while he is prepared to part with others, “So, if you have a favourite that you would like to add to your personal collection, do pop in and see me,” Mr Burgess concluded.
“Thank you all for your support over the last decade-and-a-half.”
Last year The Moody Cow took the runner’s up position in new research that detailed Britain’s best pub names. This accolades is a celebration of the humour, charm and community spirits that define local pubs - and a great reminder of the important role they play in UK culture.
